Overview
Whether you are new to the community or have been around for a long time, we
would like to welcome you at Knollwood Park.
Our congregation started as a Sunday School with sixteen children. In the year
1907, Rev. Thomas H. Mitchell and Rev. F. Ballantyne, Moderator and Clerk of
New St. James' Session visited the Knollwood Park area and found that there was
no provision for a Sunday School for the children. They reported their finds to
their Session at New St. James, with the result that at a Session meeting on
October 9th, 1907 it was agreed to open a Sabbath School as soon as a suitable
building could be provided. Rev. Ballantyne made another visit to the area, and
stating the need of a place to start a Sabbath School to Mr. W. W. Gammage,
florist, who offered the free use of their shipping room until a more suitable
place could be found. This was located at Oxford and Gammage Streets where
Loblaws was and where the Bellwood Plaza is now. Seats, hymnals, Sunday School
helpers, etc. were provided by First Presbyterian and New St. James Churches.
The elders of New St. James took charge for the first month and on November
13th, 1907 Mr. George Millar was formally appointed to be Superintendent of
the School. An afternoon service was held until October 1909 when Rev. Peter
Nichol was appointed as Minister in charge.
Today we are a growing church that offers a warm and friendly family atmosphere
in which we can worship and serve God.
We will be celebrating Knollwood Park's 100th Anniversary on Sunday Oct. 18th
2009
